St. Morand was a Benedictine priest, born of a noble family near Worms in Germany. He was educated at the cathedral school and was ordained a priest.
He made a pilgrimage to Spain and entered the Benedictine Order at Cluny under the direction of St. Hugh.
Around 1100 St. Morand was sent to lower Alsace at the request of Count Frederick, who had just restored St. Christopher Church in Altkirch. St. Morand became the count's counselor and became famous for his many miracles.
He is the patron of winemakers because during one Lenten season he survived by eating only a bunch of grapes.
