TO THE EDITOR:
I would like to share some thoughts regarding the article “President urges ‘mutual respect, dialogue’” by Gene Stowe on 21 May.
I was at the Notre Dame commencement this year, and heard our President speak, as well as others. The author of your article says that the president “took on the controversy” (abortion).
Now I heard the speech, I read the article, but nowhere do I see any words that let us know what the president will do. It is fine to urge dialogue, but a leader must lead. Will he vote for or against? Will he permit tax revenue to be used to fund abortions or not? He gives no answer.
His record is clearly pro-abortion.
The Rhode Island Catholic ought to clearly, and strongly present a Catholic point of view.
I am curious – the title of the article “President urges ‘mutual respect, dialogue’” implies that the President (clearly pro-abortion) is ready for dialogue, but the other side (the Catholic Church and pro-life forces) need to be “urged” into a dialogue. Is it true that pro-life groups in general refuse to speak to the President on this issue?
Obama spoke well, but the “proof is in the pudding”- let us watch what actions he takes.
