LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Who’s to blame for demise of marriage?

TO THE EDITOR:

I do not question the right of The Rhode Island Catholic to express its opinion very strongly on the issue of "same-sex marriage" as it has done most frequently.

What I do object to is the headline on the front page of the May 21, 2009 edition, namely, "Marriage threatened again at State House."

Such a headline, followed by the content of the article, places blame for the possible demise of the marriage state as practiced in our culture.

In essence, it attributes to a present non-entity, namely, same-sex marriage, the potential power of destroying our present concept of marriage, while ignoring the actual fact that the present entity, namely, heterosexual marriage, has rocked and shook the very foundation of the present institution of marriage by the astounding divorce rate of well over 50 percent of present heterosexual marriages.

Thus, to react like an ostrich, with its head in the sand by attempting to portray same-sex marriage as a villain lurking out there to destroy the present concept of marriage, while marriage is being destroyed by forces within its own structure is quite ludicrous, unfair and strikes of the very despicable tactics of the 1954 McCarthy Era.
